Del Potro next for Soderling in Estoril; Tsonga out

OEIRAS, Portugal (AP)?Robin Soderling won his first clay-court match of the season Wednesday, beating Jeremy Chardy 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-1 in the second round at the Estoril Open.

The top-seeded Swede, who lost his opening clay match in Barcelona last week, is preparing for next month?s French Open. He has reached two finals at clay-court Grand Slam tournament.

Soderling faces a stern test in the quarterfinals against eighth-seeded Juan Martin del Potro, who beat him in straight sets in Miami. The Argentine advanced after overcoming Alejandro Falla 6-2, 6-1.

Third-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga went out against Pablo Cuevas, the Uruguayan winning 6-2, 7-6 (0), while sixth-seeded Thomaz Bellucci eliminated Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-3, 5-7, 7-5.

Soderling overpowered Chardy in the first set, winning four straight games after twice breaking the Frenchman and twice not conceding a point on his own serve.

Both players were plagued by unforced errors in the second set and broke each other three times apiece.

A dispute with the umpire over a call in the second game of the third set appeared to unsettle Chardy, allowing Soderling to rack up 13 straight points.

The fifth-ranked Soderling, the only top-10 player in Portugal, had a bye into the second round.

The Swede made a strong start to the year, clinching titles in Marseille, Rotterdam and Brisbane before going out in the third round of Masters events in Indian Wells and Miami last month.

The top three seeded women?Alisa Kleybanova, Jarmila Gajdosova and Klara Zakopalova?all advanced to the quarterfinals.

Clijsters begins training, looks good for French

Kim Clijsters has begun endurance work and appears to be on track to play Roland Garros, just a month after she tore ligaments in her ankle while dancing at her nephew's wedding, the Belgian press reports. After winning her fourth Grand Slam at the Australian Open, Clijsters made it her goal to try and win the two major titles that have eluded her, Roland Garros and Wimbledon. "It's about effort, but Kim is where I had expected", her physical trainer Sam Verslegers said. "This week was mainly endurance training and the ankle has responded well. Next week we'll begin movements that you need for tennis and if everything goes well by the end of the week she can start tennis training."

Toughing It Out: Nishikori Returns to Scene of Triumph

DELRAY BEACH, Fla.?Kei Nishikori sits placidly in a straight-back chair, his hands clasped together, fingers gently intertwined, dark hair spiking skyward, a confident smile creeping across his still-baby face. The Japanese cameraman has been peppering Nishikori with questions and the 21-year-old is politely doing his best to oblige with cogent answers. But for Nishikori, explaining the last three years since his breakout performance and first ATP tour title at the International Tennis Championships in Delray Beach is about as easy as translating his innermost thoughts from Japanese to English.

?It was really tough,? Nishikori later reiterates several times when asked to describe his forced eight-month hiatus from the game due to a right elbow injury. ?My ranking was going up, up. I was 56, and then I got the injury. I had MRIs in New York and Japan and they couldn?t see anything. It take so much time to decide to have the surgery. Mentally I was really down and tired. It was a really tough decision for me.?

Nishikori seems both relaxed and relieved to be back in Delray, where, after losing in the first round last year, he has now reached the semifinals with wins over Brian Dabul, James Blake?runner-up here in 2007 and 2008 but a wild card this year due to his No. 144 ranking?and Ryan Sweeting. Should Nishikori go on to win the tournament, his ranking would rise to within the world?s Top 50.

It seems a career ago when Nishikori, then just 18 years old, qualified in just his sixth ATP event in Delray Beach and then stunned four Americans?Amer Delic, Bobby Reynolds, third-seeded Sam Querrey (saving four match points in the process) and No. 1 Blake?to win the ITC Championship, becoming the youngest man to win an ATP title since then-16-year-old Lleyton Hewitt captured Adelaide 10 years earlier. He was also the first Japanese man to win a tour event since Shuzo Matsuoka was victorious in Seoul in 1992.

(Matsuoka is perhaps better known for inspiring the tour?s ?cramping rule? that allows for players to be tended to on-court without defaulting for a physical loss of condition. He reluctantly forfeited a first-round U.S. Open match against Czech Petr Korda on the Grandstand in 1995 while writhing on the court in pain.)

Within five months of winning in Delray in 2008, Nishikori reached the round of 16 at the U.S. Open, capturing the hearts and imagination of the discerning New York fans with his five-set win over fourth-seeded David Ferrer. Though he fell in the fourth round to Juan Martin del Potro, Nishikori had made his entrance onto one of the biggest stages in tennis. Then, after struggling through the first three months of 2009, he was out for the rest of the season, back home in Japan, re-learning to bend his arm and doing post-surgery rehab every day for two months.

Kei Nishikori, Marin Cilic
Nishikori's five-hour, five-set win over Marin Cilic in last year's U.S. Open has arguably been the high point of his post-injury play. (AP Photo)
?It was really tough,? says Nishikori, who heralded his return to the tour last year by winning four Challenger events and then qualifying for the U.S. Open, where he upset Marin Cilic in five sets in four hours and 59 minutes in the second round. ?I was trying to get out of tennis, trying not to see anything. Because if I see it, I really want to play. I was trying my best not to think about tennis.

?It says a lot about him and his tennis that he is only 21 years old and he has been able to come back from a big injury,? says Nishikori?s coach, Dante Bottini, who works with him fulltime through the IMG/Bollettieri Tennis Academy. Nishikori also recently signed on former top tenner Brad Gilbert, who he met when he roomed with his son, Zack, for 10-15 weeks a year. ?But he is still young and has a lot to learn. I love his backhand but right now we are working especially on his serve and his defense.?

Nishikori was just 14 when he left his home in Shimane, Japan, for tennis? most famed sweatshop in Bradenton, Florida. According to Nishikori, the only thing the ?small city? of Shimane is known for is its proximity to Hiroshima, site of the U.S.? launching of the atomic bomb at the end of World War II. As luck would have, Shimane also boasted a tennis court just five minutes from the home Nishikori shared with his mother, Eri, a piano teacher; father, Kiyoshi, an engineer; and older sister, Reina.

As the youngster?s tennis improved he quickly outgrew his local sparring partners. Then, thanks to a grant from Sony CEO Masaaki Morita, Nishikori and a few fellow select Japanese juniors were sent to train at IMG?s Bollettieri academy.

?It was hard,? says Nishikori of the adjustment to the U.S. and the academy existence. ?But because I came with three other friends and one Japanese coach was with me all the time; it wasn?t, like, horrible. But I was still struggling to make friends and learn English.

?But I was really enjoying the tennis, Nishikori adds. ?It was fun to play with good guys, strong players and have good weather all the time.?

?It wasn?t as tough for Kei because everyone knew him there and he was with IMG and his agent was there,? says Gastao Elia, who roomed with Nishikori in the academy dorms for a year before Nishikori went off-campus into housing of his own. ?Everyone knew who he was and had a lot of respect for him. He didn?t play that many junior tournaments (though he did win the French Open junior doubles in 2006 with Argentine Emiliano Massa and ranked No. 7 in the ITF singles rankings) because he moved up to the pros pretty quickly. He was really fast, had good technique and you could see that he had a lot of potential.

?But he was also very reserved and very quiet,? adds Elia. ?Other than tennis, he stayed in the room a lot, talking to his friends on the computer or watching Japanese cartoons. He wasn?t the kid of guy who would ever get in trouble. He?s very Asian, reserved and respectful. He doesn?t share that much of his life.?

One thing that Nishikori has shared is Project 45, the name for his goal of surpassing Matsuoka?s career high ranking of No. 46 in 1992?the highest ever for a Japanese male. While Japanese women?including 40-year-old Kimiko Date Krumm?have achieved relative success at the professional level, Japanese men have struggled. Nishikori is hoping to change that. And now that he has faced adversity at such a young age, Nishikori believes he is better prepared for the future.

?I learned so many things when I was injured,? he says. ?I have to take care of my body more, start with little things like stretching and massage. But right now I?m just enjoying playing tennis and playing well.

?Of course, my goal is No. 1,? Nishikori adds when asked what he dreams of. Then, with a playful smile, he throws in, ?And my favorite tournament is the French Open. I have good memories there. Yeah, I hope I can win the French Open.?

Dimitrov upsets Baghdatis in Munich; Youzhny out

MUNICH (AP)?Defending champion and top-seeded Mikhail Youzhny of Russia and two other seeded players tumbled out of the BMW Open in the second round Wednesday.

Philipp Petzschner of Germany upset Youzhny 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-2 to avenge a semifinal loss to the Russian last year.

?My goal is to make at least the semifinals, like last year,? said Petzschner, who reached his second quarterfinal of the year.

Bulgarian teenager Grigor Dimitrov reached his first career quarterfinal when he rallied to beat fourth-seeded Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-2.

Dimitrov, who is ranked No. 69 and will turn 20 next month, is the only teenager in the top 100.

Baghdatis snapped a six-match losing streak with his first-round win in Munich, where he was a semifinalist in 2007 and last year.

Potito Starace of Italy defeated sixth-seeded Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine 6-4, 6-2 on a day of rain delays.

Starace will play Petzschner in the quarters.

Because of the delays, organizers moved the last second-round match between Florian Mayer of Germany and Teymuraz Gabashvili of Russia to Thursday.

Nadal beats Dodig for 500th win, gets Ferrer in final

BARCELONA, Spain (AP)?Rafael Nadal and fellow Spaniard David Ferrer will meet in their second final in two weeks at the Barcelona Open.

Both cruised through their semifinals Saturday, Nadal beating the only non-Spaniard in the last four, Ivan Dodig of Croatia 6-3, 6-2, and Ferrer topping Nicolas Almagro 6-3, 6-4.

Nadal won his 28th straight match in Barcelona, including five straight titles from 2005-09. He missed last year because of injury.

He defeated Ferrer in the Barcelona finals of 2008 and 2009, and in last weekend?s final of the Monte Carlo Masters.

Nadal leads their career series 12-4.

?I like to look at stats that favor me,? Nadal said. ?But every game is different and David is having a great beginning to the year.?

A Spaniard will feature in the Barcelona final for the 15th straight year, and win it for an eighth year in a row. Ferrer, Spain?s second highest-ranked player behind Nadal, hopes to add his name to the honor roll.

?I am very happy (to be in the finals),? Ferrer said. ?Barcelona is the tournament that most motivates me, it is the tournament I most want to win.

?I know that it is going to be complicated with Nadal there, but I am in the final and I want to enjoy it.?

Nadal made a commanding start when he slapped Dodig?s approach shot down the middle as he reeled off eight straight points to break his unseeded challenger.

Dodig, who upset Robin Soderling in the second round, broke Nadal back in the fourth game when the Spaniard?s forehand sailed long, and then held his serve to go ahead 3-2.

Nadal forced the Croat into hitting wide with a deep cross to record his second service break in the seventh game, and Dodig then hit a pair of double-faults as Nadal closed out the first set.

The second set began just like the first with Nadal breaking Dodig?s opening service game and with the underdog breaking right back. But this time Nadal dominated the rest of the set for his 500th career win.

He?s the second youngest player after Bjorn Borg to post 500 wins in the Open era.

?This is the consequence of years of hard work,? said the 24-year-old Nadal. ?The only negative thing is that I have already been on the circuit nine years.?

Earlier, an almost error-free Ferrer took advantage of an inconsistent Almagro to win their first set.

?David is playing spectacularly well right now,? said Almagro, who lost to Ferrer in the Acapulco final in February.

Ferrer hit three drop shots on his way to breaking Almagro in the fifth game of the second set, and kept serve to advance to his fourth straight final.

?He had the answer to all my weapons,? Almagro said. ?You always have to play one ball too many that he ends up winning.?

Ferrer extended his unbeaten record to 7-0 against Almagro, who will enter the top 10 when the rankings are updated Monday.

Tennis Talk: Q&A with Sania Mirza

Sania Mirza, said to be the most Googled female tennis player in the world last year, is in Charleston right now and she?s rather busy. She and doubles partner Elena Vesnina, who won the Indian Wells doubles title together last month, are in the singles and doubles quarterfinals. Several years ago, Mirza was ranked a career-high No. 27 before wrist issues led to a plunge in the rankings. Then last year, the Indian tennis player with the big forehand made big news when she married Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik. She?s been making her way back up the rankings since (she?s ranked No. 90 this week) and is enjoying married life. Yesterday we caught up with Mirza to chat about India?s recent Cricket World Cup, being a cricket WAG and, oh, tennis.

Your thoughts on India winning the Cricket World Cup last weekend?
I think it?s amazing. I did catch the India-Pakistan semifinal. First of all, I think it?s unbelievable that India and Sri Lanka, being the two host nations, made the final. You can?t ask for a better World Cup final. And then obviously India winning it. We were very proud. It hasn't happened in a very long time. I think we had the best team. And I?m a huge fan of Sachin [Tendulkar, India's most famous player]. Not like it would have made him any less if he didn?t win the World Cup, but I think it kind of completes him and now he?s the best ever, I would say.

Did you watch a lot of the matches?
I was watching online. We were in Miami during a lot of games, but it was good. I love cricket and obviously my husband being a cricketer, it doesn?t leave me much choice. But I do watch a lot of cricket anyway. I wanted to go?because I always went for some matches?but unfortunately I couldn?t.

You won the Indian Wells doubles title with Elena Vesnina around the same time. Were you inspired by the team?
We won before them actually. [laughs] Obviously as a sportsperson you think of a lot of things when you go on court. Playing for your country, it?s a big honor. No matter what sport you?re playing, no matter what you?re doing, if you?re representing your country it brings out the best in you. Even though ours is more an individual sport, the fact is that you?re associated with your country. And it makes you very proud as an Indian to say that we?re world champions at cricket, a sport that?s so huge in that part of the world.

You called yourself a ?cricket WAG? on your Twitter profile. How?s that going?
Well, I haven?t seen my husband in five weeks. He?s not here?he?s in Pakistan right now. Twitter?s just fun. I was a tennis player first, because that Twitter account was made before I was married. And then I became married and I thought, ?Let me do something fun.? Twitter is a great way just to interact with people. It makes you understand how people look up to you in so many different ways. Imagine just hitting some tennis balls and people are treating you like an idol. That?s amazing. I have a lot of fans on there?200,000 I think?and I didn?t even know that so many people would actually want to know what I want to say. I?ve started interacting a bit more lately. It?s a fun thing. It?s very addictive, I must say.

Your first wedding anniversary is next week? How will you celebrate?
It?s on the 12th. It really depends on how far I go here. The tournament ends on the 11th. Hopefully I should make it in time?or hopefully not. [laughs] No, we?re very not that kind of a couple. We don?t say, ?Oh, you didn?t come for my birthday.? I think that?s the great thing about our relationship. Because we?ve lived the same lives, but not in a way, some things don?t need to be explained and said. So there you go. Maybe we can celebrate it on the 13th.

Has marriage affected your career?
It has, and it hasn?t. It?s great to have someone by your side no matter what, and it has nothing to do with tennis or anything else. But having said that, because he is a professional athlete himself, he understands what goes with being a professional athlete, so it becomes a lot easier. He understands the pressure, because he was the cricket captain in his country. In India and Pakistan, being the cricket captain is probably the highest pressure you can cope with. [laughs] It?s a really big deal. And we train together, we go to the gym together. We enjoy each other?s sport. There?s a lot of positive energy. The most important thing is, when you?re happy, everything else seems ok. For me, tennis has always been a part of my life?it?s never been my life. Yes, I love it. To be playing tennis today is a blessing, because I really never thought I was going to hold a tennis racquet again in my life. To be playing, to be back in the Top 100, I feel like I?ve achieved something very big and very satisfying in my life.

You?re speaking of the wrist injury you struggled with for a while. How did it change your outlook on your game and your life? You?ve struggled with it for a few years.
Since 2008. I was No. 27 in the world when I got injured. It was in Indian Wells. I remember the match?I beat Shahar Peer. We played for three hours plus. I came off the court and I tried to press the button on the bike; I couldn?t press it. Then that?s it. Literally 10 days and I went into surgery. That?s where it all started. When I came back from surgery it was too much pain. Then I took off, came back, took off. It was never a continuous thing. Maybe I just needed to take six months off at the beginning. I mean, you never know.

It makes you value more what you have now?
Everything happens for a reason. If I wasn?t injured for six months last year I wouldn?t have gotten married, because I had no time. Because I would be on tour, and I probably wouldn?t have met [Shoaib]. I really thank God that I?m playing again, I thank God that I found the person I love and I also thank God that I?m close to playing my best tennis.

You both live in Dubai now. How do you like it there?
Yeah, we?re based there. We don?t spend as much time as we?d like to. If I?m not traveling for tennis, I?m traveling for cricket. From here we?ll go to Dubai, we?ll stay a few days. We kind of also have to shuffle between India and Pakistan, because his mom still lives in Pakistan, my parents still live in India. We still travel a lot. Yes, we?re based out of Dubai, but we spend a lot of time everywhere.

You and Elena Vesnina are doing well here in singles and doubles, pretty soon after winning in the Indian Wells doubles title. Think that title is helping?
Doubles is a great way to keep your confidence going. We won Indian Wells, and Elena made the third round in Miami and are in the quarterfinals here. It can change things?it gives you a lot of confidence, it improves your game a lot, still keeps you in that competitive edge. Because we?re both singles players, our priority is singles. We?re also very good doubles players, and we?re playing together at least until Wimbledon. We?re doing quite ok until now. [laughs]

What do you consider your biggest on-court achievements?
There are a few. Definitely winning the Australian Open mixed doubles title. To be in the Top 30, from India, being a woman?I think that?s a really big achievement.

What are your goals for the rest of the year and beyond?
Just to stay healthy. Because every time I set a target for myself, I get injured. So I?m getting a bit superstitious about it.

Dream Tennis - If you could have your vacation anywhere

If you could have your tennis vacation anywhere in the world, where would you go? We give you eight places to start looking.

By Ian Keown

A Jaguar XJ6 Sovereign meets you at the airport. The chauffeur calls ahead to put in your room-service order. You drive through wrought-iron gates, along a tree-lined road, past banks of bluebells and azaleas, up to the formal portico. There, a duty manager and a porter greet you by name.

Your luggage is already in your room. Just down the road are four well-maintained tennis courts. Is this a commercial for a $10,000 watch? No, it?s your introduction to a tennis vacation at Chewton Glen in the south of England. But that?s not the only place for a high-end tennis vacation. Switch up the setting and a few of the amenities, and it could be a once-in-a-lifetime getaway at any of the following eight resorts around the world.

Granted, these places are pricey. But think big?we meant ?once-in-a-lifetime? literally.

The rates below are approximate conversions of local currencies in U.S. dollars, as of the end of April. They?re nightly double-occupancy room rates; ?LS? means low season and ?HS? means high season. Check for special deals and packages. You may find that you can save
a few hundred dollars here and there.

HOTEL RELAIS CERTOSA, FLORENCE, ITALY

From the courts at the Relais Certosa you can see the Monastero della Certosa del Galluzzo, which crowns a hill overlooking Florence. In fact, the Relais Certosa was once the guest housing for the monastery. Now refurbished, it has 69 rooms and suites decorated in a Tuscan style, with beamed ceilings and antiques enhanced with secular perks like satellite TVs and minibars. The dining room serves dishes like crostini or Florentine steaks and Chiantis from the surrounding vineyards. Take time out from the tennis and dining to let the Cistercian monks show you around their grounds. And if you feel like doing some sightseeing, the historic center of Florence is just down the road.

www.?orencehotelcertosa.it; 63 rooms, 6 suites, from $150 LS and $400 HS, including breakfast; 4 lit courts (2 clay, 1 hard, 1 synthetic grass), $19 per court hourly, pro, lessons, player matching available

HOTEL PUENTE ROMANO, MARBELLA, MLAGA, SPAIN

The center court of this hotel has hosted Davis Cup matches, and the 293 rooms and suites have welcomed stars like Sean Connery, Elizabeth Taylor, and Antonio Banderas. The Puente Romano Tennis and Fitness Club has 10 courts and its own snack bar, a venue within a venue for eating and drinking throughout the day. There are also three outdoor pools, four paddle-ball courts, six restaurants, and subtropical gardens with 400 species of ? owers and plants. In the evenings, drive a short distance to Puerto Banos, where you?ll ? nd bars, clubs, and boutiques. If what you have in mind is a vacation with lots of tennis and plenty of night life, this is your place.

This being the Alps, there are gorgeous views of the Wilder Kaiser mountain range and plenty of outdoor exercise options like mountain biking and hiking on trails so steep that they have cables attached to the rocks to help you ascend at parts. So why ?Bio?? It refers to the eco-friendly nature of the hotel?they grow their own produce and make every attempt to blend into the environment. Many buildings have grass-covered roofs to blend in with the surroundings.

Each pavilion suite includes a Thai-style sala, or gazebo, with an outdoor dining area. GSTAAD PALACE, GSTAAD, SWITZERLAND

This is where Roy Emerson has been coming for 35 summers to conduct his acclaimed tennis camps. He?s a smart guy?who wouldn?t want to spend a few weeks in such a setting, even if it involves coaching duffers? After participating in Emmo?s daily on-court drills, unwind in the indoor and outdoor pools, with mountain bikes and hikes, or in the new spa. What if it rains? There are indoor courts nearby, but you can also stay put in the hotel, an imposing family-owned stone building with ? replaces and frescoed ceilings, and ? ve restaurants where you can recharge after a face-off on the court. Even without Emerson in residence, the Palace is quite a place.
