Vinci beats Wickmayer to reach Unicef Open semis

DEN BOSCH, Netherlands (AP)?Roberta Vinci of Italy beat third-seeded Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinals at the Unicef Open on a rain-plagued day.

Showers throughout Thursday forced the postponement of several quarterfinal matches, while others were suspended and will be completed Friday.

The seventh-seeded Vinci capitalized on an error-strewn performance by Wickmayer to break the Belgian?s serve once in the first set and three times in the second.

The start of the match was delayed by persistent rain and play was briefly interrupted by another shower with Vinci leading 3-2 in the second set.

In matches that were completed Thursday, Australia?s Jelena Dokic beat Johanna Larsson of Sweden 7-6 (2), 6-4, and Romina Oprandi of Italy, who ousted Kim Clijsters in the second round, beat Japan?s Kimiko Date-Krumm 7-6 (3), 6-4.

In the only men?s quarterfinal to finish before rain washed out play, fourth-seeded Ivan Dodig of Croatia beat Russia?s Teymuraz Gabashvili 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Second seeded Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova will resume her quarterfinal against Dominika Cibulkova down 0-3 in the final set after the fifth-seeded Slovak broke her serve twice as rain closed in Thursday night.

In other unfinished matches, Santiago Giraldo of Columbia and Russian Dmitry Tursunov?s quarterfinal was evenly poised at 3-6, 6-4, 4-4, while Belgium?s Xavier Malisse was leading American Alex Bogomolov Jr. 6-2, 4-3.
