Vesnina retires in Baku, sending Rezai through

BAKU, Azerbaijan (AP)?Aravane Rezai of France advanced to the quarterfinals of the Baku Cup on Wednesday when third-seeded Russian Elena Vesnina retired because of illness while trailing 6-3, 1-0.

Vesnina called for medical attention and had her blood pressure taken after the first set. She retired after losing her serve in the opening game of the second set.

Also, fifth-seeded Monica Niculescu of Romania lost 7-6 (2), 6-2 to Galina Voskoboeva.

Ksenia Pervak advanced with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Vesna Dolonts in an all-Russian match, and Mariya Koryttseva of Ukraine reached the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Anastasiya Yakimova of Belarus.
